International Consumer Electronics(CES) trade show 2015 - Las Vegas

The International Consumer Electronics Show has been started in Las Vegas yesterday, which will be held from 6 to 9 January, Which give technology related companies an opportunity to familiarize their latest gadgets including 4K resolution TVs, and might be a curved smartphone and Toyota’s latest venture into hydrogen-power.

“It seems that every year there’s a central theme to the technology introduced and a lot of those have just whiffed,” said Jordan Selburn, an analyst for market researcher  at IHS Inc.(IHS Inc. (IHS) is a company based in Douglas County, Colorado, United States. IHS provides information, expertise and analysis to support the decision-making)

One item excited the show was LG’s G Flex 2 – the South Korean company’s most awaited second curved Android smartphone. It has a very powerful processor to the original LG's G Flex smart phone. Gone are those days where earlier model’s big screen – replaced by a more user handable 5.5 inches display with 1080p resolution. The curve is also less pronounced and used as flex – which the company hopes to make it easier to hold in a single hand, and the casing is very hard plastic, which we hope will be more scratch resistant than before.

Dana Wolman, the managing editor of Engadget,concluded that “LG is just the latest company to announce a curved gadget. In this case it’s the LG Flex 2, a curved smartphone. But it’s only the latest curved gadget we’ve seen. Samsung came out with a curved all-in-one computer for the home and so far there are already curved TVs, curved monitors, curved smart phones, curved sound bars. Really, these companies are trying to make curved happen whether you are interested or not.”

Japanese giant, Panasonic breaks the suspense, with CX850 series of 4K LED LCD Ultra HD smart TVs. The company said that it displays more vibrant colours and higher purity blacks. The CX850 series supports 4K ultra HD streaming.

Toyota's 'Mirai 'Fuel Cell Sedan

Toyota’s new sporty, hydrogen-powered ‘Mirai’ was also displayed at the expo. The electricity that powers the motors is made on-board as needed simply bycombining hydrogen with oxygen, No emissions are produced other than water vapour making it an eco-friendly car.

Fail: Users complain about the new Apple Maps on iOS 6

An entire city is in the ocean, a farm has been labelled as an airport, highways end in the middle of nowhere and a hospital now covers the entire centre of British city Stratford-upon-Avon, Shakespeare's home.

Welcome to the new world of Apple Maps that greeted iPhone and iPad users when they downloaded the highly anticipated update to the consumer giant's mobile software platform, iOS 6.

Apple Inc's home-grown Maps feature was introduced with much fanfare in June by Apple's software chief Scott Forstall and is a direct challenge to the same service offered by friend-turned-rival Google.

But the app is already facing criticism from users globally for a number of geographical errors, missing information and because it lacks features that made Google Maps so popular, including public transit directions, comprehensive traffic data or street view pictures.

Apple Maps has replaced Google Maps, which is no longer available on iOS 6.

"Maps is a cloud-based solution and the more people use it, the better it will get," she said. "We appreciate all of the customer feedback and are working hard to make the customer experience even better."

The criticism comes on the eve of the launch of Apple's iPhone 5, which hits stores around the globe on Friday. The iPhone 5 comes pre-loaded with the new iOS 6 software and Maps.

Users have created a Tumblr blog sarcastically dubbed "The Amazing iOS 6 Maps" where many have posted screen shots of the errors (theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/). Pictures showed the Norwegian town of Leknes in the Norwegian sea, the entire city centre of Stratford-upon-Avon is labelled as a hospital.

Some of the errors have even irked politicians. Irish Minister for Justice Alan Shatter said he was surprised to discover that Airfield - a 35-acre estate with working farm and café in centre of his constituency in Dundrum, Ireland - has been labelled with the image of an aircraft.

He said this could be dangerous for pilots and suggested in a statement that Apple use the image of "a cow, a goat, a sheep, a flower" instead, and that an "aircraft is an entirely inappropriate flight of imagination."

Users in Asia were surprised to see two sets of the disputed territory of Senkaku Islands. Some joked that this was Apple's effort at providing a diplomatic solution to Japan and China, both of which claim the islands.

Not an easy fix

New York city residents are unhappy that Apple maps doesn't offer public transit directions, one of the most-used features on Google Maps in cities.

"My phone should be able to tell me which bus and train to take," said Kenan Ali, a Brooklyn, New York, resident who exclusively uses public transport in the city and has been an iPhone user since 2008. "I am hoping in the next update they will somehow add transit directions."

Apple's map service comes with three-dimensional images of cities called "Flyover" along with real-time traffic updates and also turn-by-turn navigation, the last a feature that Google has in Android devices but had not made available in Apple devices.

Apple licenses mapping data from vehicle navigation systems maker TomTom. TomTom said it stands behind the quality of its maps but didn't develop the app.

"During the process of turning mapping data into an app, every manufacturer does it their own way," said TomTom spokesperson Cem Cohen. "We are not part of that process. Apple uses exactly the same maps as our other customers."

Cohen said TomTom hasn't talked to Apple about the issues.

While in theory it will be possible for Apple to update Maps with a software fix, the problems appear to be "pretty profound and pretty fundamental," said Marcus Thielking, co-founder of Skobbler, maker of the popular GPS Navigation 2 app, built using the crowdsourced OpenStreetMap platform.

"The question is really how much expertise do they have in-house and what they sourced from third parties," Thielking said, adding that Apple requires people with a very specific skill set to fix it.

"It's not their core competence," he added.

Google, for its part, did not say whether it would do a Google Maps apps for iOS 6. Users now have to access Google Maps through the browser.

"Our goal is to make Google Maps available to everyone who wants to use it, regardless of device, browser, or operating system," the company said in a statement.

Apple shares closed down about 0.5 per cent at $698.70 on Nasdaq, a day after reaching an all-time high of $703.99. The shares have gained over 20 per cent in the past 3-1/2 months in the build-up to the launch of the iPhone 5.

Facebook tests Photo Sync feature on Android

Automatic photo uploads are a feature missing from the core of most mobile operating systems, but Android has often provided the functionality for app developers to push images to services the minute they are taken. Facebook knows this and has enabled such a feature in its official Android client, testing it with limited set of device owners.

The Verge reports that Facebook’s new Photo Sync feature operates similarly to how the Google+ Android app pushes photos to Google Photos (or Picasa) storage, but uploads will reside in a “Synced from Phone” folder inside Facebook’s Photos page, waiting for you to take appropriate action.

If you were worried you’d be sharing some of those more private photos without knowing, Facebook has you covered.

Facebook appears to be leaning on both Google and Dropbox for inspiration behind its new feature, but as with many of its website features, it is first pushed to a limited subset of users before the company decides whether to roll it out in a future app update.

Facebook also has a small help page on the Photo Sync feature, explaining how it works and hosting a small FAQ to ease worries of those who have access the new sync feature and are worried about using it.

The video’s description uses the same phrase as before: “Intuitive, innovative, and stylish, the Galaxy S III is The Next Big Thing—and it’s already here.” It then points viewers to the Samsung Mobile USA Facebook Page.

The Apple iPhone 5 gets rave reviews

Apple's iPhone 5 has won rave reviews from tech bloggers and other reviewers who were given the faster, slimmer and lighter smartphone ahead of its release to customers later this week, with CNET describing it as "flat out lovely."

The new connector to link the iPhone to docking stations got the thumbs down because it renders existing speakers and other accessories obsolete, but the phone itself wowed reviewers.

"The iPhone 5 is What we've wanted since 2010, adding long-overdue upgrades like a larger screen and faster 4G LTE in a razor-sharp new design.

Apple touted the phone as 20 per cent lighter than the previous one but Charles Arthur, writing in Britain's Guardian newspaper, said this still comes as a surprise when you first handle it.

"It's really light, making the year-old iPhone 4S feel like a paperweight," he wrote.

"There's also a subtle friction to the edges and the metal back that makes it far less likely to slip from your grasp (a complaint often made of the iPhone 4 and 4S)."

"While Apple's maps feature a 3D "flyover" view of some central cities, they lack Google's very useful ground-level photographic street views," he said.

"They also lack public-transit routing. Apple will instead link you to third-party transit apps," he added, although he praised the addition of turn-by-turn map navigation, something Google had not made available in its iPhone app.

Buyers have embraced the new iPhone too, buying 2 million in the first 24 hours of presales in the fastest iPhone launch ever.

Apple's US online store has imposed a limit of two phones per customer, with projected delivery dates pushed out to 3-4 weeks.

Apple stock hit an all-time high of $703.50 on Wednesday, ahead of the phone's official availability on Friday, before easing back to $701.03, down 0.1 per cent.

McCracken said the addition of LTE mobile network connectivity, allowing iPhone 5 users to make use of faster, 4G networks, was worth the price.

However, David Pogue, in the New York Times, questioned whether it was worth breaking two-year phone contracts to upgrade from a year-old iPhone 4S.

"(It's) maybe not worth it for the 5's collection of nips and tucks. But if you've had the discipline to sit out a couple of iPhone generations - wow, are you in for a treat," he wrote.

The Huffington Post said the design was a generation ahead of others while Bloomberg said the iPhone "retains the title of handsomest phone you can buy."

"The fit and finish really are more like a fine wristwatch, as Apple boasts, than a gadget you might shove into pocket or purse," wrote Bloomberg's Rich Jaroslovsky.

TechCrunch blogger MG Siegler accepted his past liking for Apple products might colour the thinking of some readers but said the new phone was fantastic.

"Of course, you're probably expecting me to say that. But that doesn't mean I'm wrong," Siegler argued. "The fact of the matter is, you can either listen to me or lose out. You're going to want this phone."

Many Apple aficionados in India are willing to shell out as much as Rs 1.21 lakh to own the iPhone 5 within days of its initial release in the US and seven other countries.

DNA reports that four Ahmedabad citizens paid Rs 1 lakh in advance for the phone and will pay an additional Rs 21,000 at the time of delivery.

Bharat Bhagnani in a Forbes blog says the "the grey market is throbbing with 'pre-orders' for iPhone 5, with prices skyrocketing up to almost Rs 80,000 to Rs 1,00,000 for delivery by September end." Bhagnani spoke to grey market dealers in Delhi and Mumbai, who were also willing to offer up to Rs 26,000 for a used iPhone 4S depending on its condition.

But the early iPhone 5 birds in India may encounter a technical hitch. The iPhone 5 comes with a nano-SIM tray and Indian mobile service providers do not currently offer nano-SIMs.

Also unlike micro-SIMs that are used in the iPhone 4S, they cannot be easily cut from regular SIMs using a SIM cutter.

This could mean that the iPhone 5s that eager Indian buyers with deep pockets lap up at premium prices may be as functional as the iPod Touch, though the DNA report quotes an unnamed official from a telecom operator in Gujarat saying that they have placed orders for nano-SIMs.

Google Has Just Added Another Cool Source of Entertainment : Sound Effects For Google + Hangouts.

As teased by Google’s own Amit Fulay, there’s now a dozen different sound effects built right into Hangouts — expect everything from cheesy applause and laugh tracks to chirping, gongs, snare drums and ticking clocks. Your conversations will never be the same.

Additionally, developers can also include sound effects into their own apps with v1.2 of the Hangouts API. Right now, we can’t tell if Google will eventually allow developers to create their own sound effects, but that could be interesting for live shows and classes.

To use the new effects, start a Hangout in G+ and click on the “Google Effects” tab shown below.

In order to take advantage of this new feature, users will have to make sure they’re updated to the latest version of the Hangouts Plugin: v3.6. It should update automatically, but if you’re having any issues, you can download the plugin here.

Twitter Now Forces You to Use its Own Image Service in its Mobile Apps

We knew it was coming, but with the release of its new iOS apps earlier today, Twitter has confirmed that it has dropped the option allowing users to select a third-party image upload service, forcing them instead to use its own service powered by Photobucket.

When entering the options screen in the iPhone or iPad app, Twitter no longer shows an option for “Image service,” instead providing choices only for video upload and read later services:

Previously, Twitter allowed users to choose from Twitter’s own option but also provided support for yFrog, TwitPic, Mobypicture, Twitgoo, Posterous (now owned by Twitter) and img.ly.

Buzzfeed — which broke the news of a potential change in Twitter’s services three days ago — spoke with Twitpic founder Noah Everett, who said he understood the decision but wished it was different:

“They’re trying to control those eyeballs on their apps, they’re an ad-based company, they make money that way.”

The move is part of Twitter’s wider drive to deliver a ‘consistent‘ experience for users. To date, the most high-profile example of this has been restrictions on the growth of third-party Twitter clients, which caused a stink in the developer community last month.

Samsung Dismisses Galaxy SIV Launch Rumors

A day after it was reported that it would launch the successor to its popular Galaxy S III at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next year, Samsung has taken to its official Twitter account to put an end to rumors of a Galaxy S4 unveiling early next year.

The tweet, which was posted to the company’s Korean account, addresses media reports and states that the “rumor is not true”:

The Korean Times report sourced anonymous company officials, suggesting that the unreleased device’s features would be “more than enough to curb Apple’s latest iPhone,” sport a 5-inch screen, would “definitely use” global LTE networks and utilise Samsung’s Exynos processor.

Samsung decided it would skip Mobile World Congress this year and follow up with an event of its own. With Apple’s iPhone 5 dominating the headlines shortly after launching and becoming available for preorder, a speculative Samsung report helped draw attention away from Apple.

Samsung’s response puts an end to rumors of an upcoming Galaxy S4 launch, for now. The Galaxy S III is heading for 30 million sales by the end of the year – it’s already the company’s bestselling smartphone, so questions would need to be asked as to why increased focus would be placed on its successor.

Google buys Snapseed's photo-editing service

Google has snapped up the digital photo editing service Snapseed as part of its effort to compete against Facebook's online social network.

Snapseed is the centrepiece of Google's acquisition of Nik Software, which developed the service's photo-editing technology.

The deal announced Monday gives Google a popular service that competes against Facebook's Instagram, whose tools are widely used to display, touch up and share photos taken on smartphones and tablet computers.

Facebook bought Instagram for $715 million in a deal that closed last month.

Google Inc. didn't disclose the terms of the Nik Software acquisition.

Snapseed could be used to increase usage of Google Plus, a social networking alternative to Facebook.

Although it has grown rapidly since its debut nearly 15 months ago, Google Plus is still experimenting with different features aimed at getting Web surfers to check into the service more frequently.

Google Plus now has about 400 million accountholders, according to a post Monday by Vic Gundotra, a Google executive who oversees the service. About 100 million users come to Google Plus each month, Gundotra said. Facebook boasts 955 million active users.

Apple Got 2 Million iPhone 5 Preorders in 24 Hours

Three days after offering the device for preorder, Apple has announced that its new lighter, thinner smartphone has sold 2 million units in its first weekend, doubling that of the iPhone 4S and making it the fastest selling device in the company’s history.

To add some perspective, that’s 1389 iPhones sold per minute and 23 purchases every second.

Apple is quick to state that demand has exceeded supply in terms of initial preorders, alerting customers that while early orders will still ship on September 21, many are due to reach doorsteps in October.

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have Crossed the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

In comparison, the iPhone 4S sold one million units in its first 24 hours, which was a record in its own right. However, with AT&T announcing earlier today that it had already surpassed preorder totals for the iPhone 4S — making it the biggest iPhone launch ever — it was only a matter of time until Apple announced a record of its own.

Scientists are developing a new technology which can verify a person's identity with a wave of the hand.

A biometric sensor in a laptop or tablet computer scans the unique pattern of veins in a person's palm to verify their identity, the Telegraph reported.

The technology, developed by Intel, could do away with the multiple passwords most people use for websites.

"The problem with passwords - we use too many of them, their rules are complex, and they differ for different websites. There is a way out of it, and biometrics is an

option," Sridhar Iyengar, director of research at Intel Labs said.He was speaking at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco last week.

The technology would require new biometric sensors to be built into computers. An accelerometer could be used to monitor when someone put the gadget down and automatically

lock it to prevent unauthorised access.

Iyengar added that the palm scanning technology worked much better than the finger-print scanners used on some laptops today.

The Windows Phone 8 lockscreen will Have Facebook and Twitter notifications

Following its defeat in the much publicised patent case in an US court, Samsung didn't miss out on the opportunity to strike back at rival Apple soon after the Cupertino-based company came up with the latest edition of its smartphone - the iPhone 5.

The Korean company released an ad that compares the specifications of the two top-of-the-line smartphones - Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III. Since the ad has been released by Samsung, it is tilted towards the S III and the copy says, "It doesn't take a genius," and follows that with, "The next big thing is already here, Galaxy S III."

iPhone 5 costs Apple $167.50 to build: Report

Apple is spending $167.50 to make each 16GB iPhone 5 that the company sells for $199 (with the standard two-year wireless contract), according to a CNET report citing an initial estimate calculated by research firm UBM TechInsights.

The firm dissected the entry-level iPhone 5 and estimated the cost of each of the various components.

"The new 4-inch 1136x640 pixel display costs $18 to build, the touch screen $7.50, and the battery $3. The A6 processor goes for $28, while the camera costs $10 and the built-in WiFi/Bluetooth/GPS is only $4. Add in the cost of several other components, and you end up with a BOM (bill of materials) of $167.50," said the report.

When compared to its predecessors, Apple shells out $132.50 to build the 16GB iPhone 4S, according to TechInsights' estimates, while the 16GB iPhone 4 costs Apple $112.

In a nutshell, an iPhone 5 costs Apple $35 more than an iPhone 4S.

TechInsights promises that it will dismantle the new iPhone and check out its interiors once the device goes on sale on September 21. The new break down is expected to yield a more accurate estimate.

The Apple iPhone 5 comes in either white and silver or black and slate. Its prices start at $199 for 16GB (with a two-year service contract). The iPhone 5 will be available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model.

A day after the unveiling of the iPhone 5, Apple's website also revealed the prices for the unlocked versions of the phone. The 16GB model is priced at $649, 32GB for $749 and $64GB for $849.

The iPhone 5's two biggest hardware updates are its larger 4-inch screen and 4G LTE radio. It's extremely rare to find a new Android phone nowadays with anything smaller than a 4-inch screen. In fact, Android manufacturers continue to make their phones bigger, sometimes absurdly so. With the iPhone 5, it's clear Apple finally broke down and realized consumers love large screens. It's also clear those who have defended Apple's decision to stick with a smaller screen were dead wrong. 

So, good point. Four-inch displays are nothing new in smartphones.

Then there's LTE, the fastest wireless data standard available. LTE has been around for over a year, starting with HTC's Thunderbolt Android phone that launched in spring 2011. Since then, nearly every premium non-iPhone device that's launched ran on LTE networks. It took a year and a half for the iPhone to achieve that.

So, good point. LTE has been around for an eternity by tech standards. It's a bummer Apple didn't include it in the iPhone 4S last year.

As for what Apple left out of the iPhone 5, there's Near Field Communication (NFC) and wireless charging. NFC chips let you make mobile payments with your phone and swap content with other devices just by tapping them together. Wireless charging lets you charge your phone by resting it on a power pad. (We saw wireless charging last week with Nokia's new Windows Phone, the Lumia 920.) Both of these features are increasingly becoming standard in smartphones, but Apple didn't include them in the iPhone 5.

Bad point. I still don't think NFC is ready for widespread use. Mobile payments are cool in theory, but the infrastructure at point of sale isn't there yet. The world isn't ready to ditch cash and credit cards for a phone. And I'm on the fence about wireless charging. It seems cool in theory, but charging is much slower using one of those wireless pads. I'd rather have my phone get to 100% in several minutes, not several hours. As history shows us, Apple isn't going to put features like these in the iPhone just because it can. It's going to wait until they've perfected them.

At the end of the day, the criticism doesn't matter. Apple leapfrogged everyone by several years when it introduced the first iPhone. Today, its mobile ecosystem is the best there is. Its mobile operating system is the best there is. And that's what really grabs people's attention. Software. Not hardware tricks and specs.
